It is rare that I get to watch a good movie during the week. I mean really watch it, from start to finish, focusing on every shot, every frame. Tuesday night, after an exhausting day, I was able to get home early and put on a movie. Searching for something edgy, I got a pleasantly disgusting surprise. I watched Wetlands. Start to finish. And I loved every single shot, every frame. What started as a gross German teenager narrating random things about her nasty habits and experiments turned into an emotional tale of a young woman’s life and her unique way of coping with her circumstances and taking control of her fate. Helen, the main character and narrator played by Carla Juri, experiments with her personal hygiene and sexuality to the point when she needs medical attention. No matter how many times my tummy wanted to turn, nothing Helen did made me want to fold down my computer screen. It may seem strange, but the weirder she got, the more charming she seemed to me. …
